2016 ENGAGE Interns – GABBY

In case you haven’t heard, we’re so excited for our ENGAGE summer interns, and are enjoying introducing you to them individually! The biggest privilege for Transform Student Ministries is hosting young people of all ages each summer for the EQUIP Boot Camps and the ENGAGE Internship. Investing in young men and women, seeing their hearts and lives changed by the Word of God and getting to serve God by discipling and serving alongside them gets our team up each morning and spurs us on in work and life (Hebrews 10:24).

GABBY

Like so many of our interns, we have had the privilege of watching God’s Word work in Gabby’s heart and life as she has grown from camper to camp staff both in age and maturity. The quiet strength that has been cultivated through the years radiates from Gabby’s heart and words as she talks with and encourages campers.

I am the sixth daughter in a family of thirteen. I have five sisters and six brothers. I have been blessed to have been raised in a Christian home.

For those who have grown up in a Christian home, their stories range from rebellion to countless summer camp highs to the goodie-two-shoes and everything in between. But no matter how we come to Him, God takes us as we are and usually not as we want to be.

Gabby told us about a time when her family was camping when she was 7, and how she was telling a boy on the camp playground that he would go to hell if he didn’t believe in Jesus. With humility she recalled her mother’s response, questioning her daughter’s own heart and belief rather than scolding or blindly encouraging her actions.

It was then that I believed in my heart that Christ died for me and the sin that I had done. I knew that I was the one who had done wrong. I repented and believed. I had true childlike faith for which I am thankful.

Sometimes it’s so easy to hear someone’s testimony, that moment of belief and want to know what happens next. But sometimes it’s good to just stop there for a second and revel in the beautiful mystery of grace. That alien gift of God that reaches into our hearts and does the impossible. Sometimes we need to be reminded that the author and perfecter of our faith is, in fact, Jesus Christ and not ourselves. Yes, the fruit comes as we abide. But we can (and should!) rest at this point in the story too!

“[The crowd said to Him], ‘What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.’” John 6:28-9

In 2013, I distinctly remember my faith becoming very real to me after what could have been a very serious car accident that I and two of my other siblings were involved in. At this point in my life, I had to decide what I was going to do with my life and who I was going to live for. After remembering things I was taught before, I realized that I needed the Lord every hour every day and that I needed to totally live my life for Him. It was here that I seriously began to apply myself to learning the Word of God, studying it for myself, and actually engaging in it. Then I felt led to begin studies of my own to disciple others and to be encouraged through and in the Word of God.

Did you notice the progression of Gabby’s journey as a disciple? She recognized her own, deep need. Then she was nourished and strengthened by studying the Scriptures, and engaging her whole self with/in it. From that, discipling others comes naturally. For if we don’t have Jesus’ words in our heart and guiding our actions, what will we have to teach others? And we’re continually learning (thanks be to God!) more and more, yet more and the same. Because our God is the same God; we never “progress” beyond the gospel. If anything we realize how much we need it! Gabby tells us a little bit of what she has learned this year

[As I’ve been] working through the Romans Part 1 study, I really began to learn exactly what happened to me doctrinally through justification, redemption, propitiation, and imputation. I am continuing to learn so much about the power we have through Christ and the gift of His Holy Spirit through His Word.

If Gabby is growing in the Word, already discipled people, and has already staffed the EQUIP Boot Camps, what would make her want to take her entire summer to be a part of the ENGAGE internship?

I cannot help but remember the passages that Paul wrote to the church of Thessalonica where he commended the Thessalonians to become imitators of them and also the Lord Jesus. At home, my family has always encouraged me to choose someone more spiritual and sharper than myself to challenge me in many ways. I without a doubt will find that challenge at Precept Ministries. I want to take this time in my life to be challenged so that I am prepared for the battle that we will face in America or wherever God calls me. I do not know what the Lord has in store whether it is a ranch in Nebraska or pastor support ministry in the Midwest but I want to be sold out for Jesus. A summer spent studying the Bible will never be wasted!

With Thanksgiving,
