Advent Blog 1

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” – Isa 7:14

Can you imagine living during the days that Christ was born? The way of life was uncertain. The government that one lived under was corrupt and in turmoil. In fact, the government that was truly in charge was a foreign government. People were waiting for their Messiah! They wanted a Savior that would give them peace among their present chaos. They had been promised and looked forward to it but He didn’t come in the way they had desired. He did come, though, just the way that was prophesied by Isaiah hundreds of years before!

As we prepare for this advent season, I think it is good that we begin to prepare our hearts as we come with great expectation of Christmas. How easy it is for us to get excited about the shopping, spending time with family, and opening presents, that we forget what we are truly celebrating and should be anticipating. Be excited that we are going to be reminded of the coming Messiah! He is coming and not just figuratively but in reality! Remember, Christ will be coming back a second time to set up His rule and His kingdom!

As you begin to think on Christ’s birth and coming, think about some of the songs that we sing during this time! Here I have included a favorite hymn by many for you to read and meditate on:

Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come, our Wisdom from on high,
Who ordered all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come, oh, come, our Lord of might,
Who to your tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times gave holy law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come O Rod of Jesse’s stem,
From ev’ry foe deliver them
That trust your mighty pow’r to save;
Bring them in vict’ry through the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come, O Key of David, come,
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come, our Dayspring from on high,
And cheer us by your drawing nigh,
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Oh, come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Oh, bid our sad divisions cease,
And be yourself our King of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

Meditation:

I encourage you to think about your heart and preparing for this season. Think about the anticipation of celebrating Christ’s birth and what that truly brought us! Let that excite you as we draw near to the day we celebrate His birth!
