Jesus Our Emmanuel

Woman sitting edited

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matt.1:20-23

I’ll never forget the night I came to Christ. It wasn’t in some huge church service. And, honestly, nobody would have even known anything was going on. It was a still, quiet night, and I was all alone in my dark room. Crying out in that deep anguish of the soul, I wanted desperately for my life to be over. I was angry, and afraid, and alone. I couldn’t handle this life that had been given me. And then I saw, as it were, a crack of light shining through on my despair. I was no longer alone. I had the Lord.

God with us.

God with me.

That night, in the privacy of my bedroom, the Lord saved me from the terrible dungeon of despair I had fallen into. He lifted my head, dried my tears, and set me on a path of life. He became my savior.

Since that night, Jesus, my Emmanuel, has walked with me as I battled the fear to speak, to look another in the eye, and to live with vulnerability. When I look back on the changes He has made in my life, I am so eternally grateful that God is WITH us. I could not have made it alone.

I think of that silent night when our Lord entered this world, born of a virgin, to save us of our sins. The world had no idea what a great thing was happening in its midst. All was still. All was hush. All was ordinary. But isn’t it just like God to take our ordinary and turn the world upside down?

Just a woman.

Just a baby.

Just a stable.

The town had left her and her husband outcast. However, like a crack of light…

God was with us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1.4-5

And for those who believe, God continues to be with us. Christ in us, the hope of glory (Col.1:27)!

This Christmas season remember that Jesus is our Emmanuel. Christ is with us. We are not alone. We do not fight alone. Christ has visited us in the privacy of our innermost beings. The world will never be the same, and neither will we.

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.” Psa.91:14-16

May our response ever be…

My lips will shout for joy,
when I sing praises to you;
my soul also, which you have redeemed.

And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long. . . Psa.71:22-23
