Why Study the Bible? A Love Story with Jesus

Introduction

Why study the Bible? Well, just as a husband romantically studies the wife whom he loves, and just as a painter studies intensely the painting he adores, so I study the Bible passionately because it is the very thing which I delight in.

Let me give you some personal reasons why I love the Bible.

My love story

I study and love the Bible because it tells me about my Jesus. From the first page to the last, it tells me about Him! Jesus Himself said that the Old Testament “bear witness about Me” (Luke 24:27, John 5:39). If the Bible speaks about Jesus, and I love Jesus, then I must love everything that the Bible says!

I study and love the Bible because all of it are the very words of my Jesus. As the bride says of the Bridegroom, so we say of Christ, “His lips are lilies, dripping liquid myrrh… His mouth is most sweet, and he is altogether desirable.” (Songs 5:13,16) And so all of the words that He speaks is pleasant to my ears and precious to my heart. How can I not love them?

I study and love the Bible because the Spirit leads me to the love of Jesus. Jesus told His disciples that the Spirit would “bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26). So the mighty Spirit delights to bring the words of the lovely Savior to us, surely we must love these precious words!

I study and love the Bible because it is the authority in my life. By this, I mean that it is what God has given every Christian to lead us in this life, the guide for a pilgrim’s progress. Some trust in the authority of experiences, and others in the authority of popes, but I will trust in the authority of the Word of God (Ps 20:7). Why? Because experiences may falter and popes may retire, but the Word of God stands forever (Is 40:8).

I study and love the Bible because it causes me to love the Triune God. And I echo the words of Augustine when he prayed, “with Your Word You pierced my heart, and I loved You.” Isn’t that the common experience of Christians? We read something in His Word and it draws our hearts up to Him? At times, we are overcome by sin and His Word says, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”. Other times, we are confused in the turmoil of everyday life, and His Word says, “Be still, and know that I am God”. Or, we live in fear that God might one day forsake us because of our sinfulness and His Word says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. Truly, the heart of every Christian can testify, “with Your Word You pierced my heart, and I loved You”.

Conclusion

So…. Why do I study the Bible? Because I am in love with it!  Why? Because it is about Jesus, it is the words of Jesus, it comes to me from His lips and His Spirit, it carries the authority of Jesus, and it causes me to love Jesus!

Give me the Bible, when my heart is broken,

When sin and grief have filled my soul with fear;

Give me the precious words by Jesus spoken,

Hold up faith’s lamp to show my Savior near.
