2016 ENGAGE Interns – Rachel

Every summer, the biggest privilege for Transform Student Ministries is hosting young people of all ages for the EQUIP Boot Camps and the ENGAGE Internship. Investing in young men and women, seeing their hearts and lives changed by the Word of God and getting to serve God by discipling and serving alongside them gets our team up each morning and spurs us on in work and life (Hebrews 10:24).

While we would love to introduce every student who comes through our ministry, we DO want to introduce our ENGAGE summer interns to you. Each of them has an encouraging story of Jesus’ grace, and we just can’t wait for them to arrive in May!

Rachel T.

We’ve already experienced the bright smile and willing heart that Rachel brings with her from the Sunflower state. She served on the camp staff last summer, and it was such a privilege to see not juts her personal growth in the Lord but the way she served her campers.

When Rachel was in high school, she came to EQUIP Boot Camp and learned the difference between just going to church, and being a part of the body of Christ:

[When I was young,] I memorized scripture like crazy in AWANA and went to church every Sunday and Wednesday and wouldn’t dare miss summer camp. Now that I think back to that time, I realize though that I participated in those events not out of a love for God and His word but because I simply knew it was the right thing to do and because I loved being at social gatherings.

But God…

When I went to EQUIP Boot Camp as a high schooler and studied the Sermon on the Mount, I realized that knowing what the Bible says isn’t enough. I realized self-righteousness is not what Jesus wants. Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:3 was a huge turning point in my life.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:3

As the students and staff wrestled with the Lord’s words in the Sermon on the Mount, we were all encouraged to know more fully the truth of that verse. Because it has power to free us from pride and the opinions of others. Blessed are those who realize their own weakness, poorness of heart, lack of ability. Blessed are those who are broken and come to face-to-face with humility.

We don’t have to “have it all together.” In fact, that’s a lie that the world tries to sell us! It’s directly against the gospel – the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are poor in spirit (not the most charismatic, smartest, most attractive, etc).

I realized that all my knowledge and participation in church meant nothing to God if I thought it was all my doing. Life moved on, my desire for God’s word grew and grew. My first two years of community college I was challenged…different theologies and opinions about God were being thrown on me.

But God…

He held Rachel, continued to pursue her heart, convict her of sin, and guide her choices for His glory and her good. How did that happen? Was it instant?

After learning [at EQUIP Boot Camp], I went from using only devotional books and sermons for my quiet time to using God’s Word as my primary source. By being faithful in using the inductive Bible study method, my understanding of Scripture and knowledge of God’s character has grown.

Not only has God grown Rachel personally, He has nourished a deep desire to minister to other young people. In fact, that’s one of the biggest reasons she applied for the ENGAGE Internship:

I love people and love investing in their lives. I know that God can do a great work in people through studying His word so I want to gain skills that will help disciple and encourage others. I desire to be closer to God and know Him more I want to dedicate my summer to spending time in His word I want to spend time gaining wisdom and learning all I can from the staff, I think it would be an amazing opportunity to be able to do this with other people my age who have the same/ similar desires as I do. I am excited about the unknown and excited to see how God can use this internship to change, strengthen, encourage me and help me to encourage others in God’s word at my church in Kansas or wherever else God leads me.

If you are encouraged by Rachel’s story and want to support her this summer, here’s the link to her support page!

Thank you in advance for any support you can provide and especially for your prayers. Please pray:
— that God will increase my faith and sustain me (as well as the six other interns) throughout the summer
— that the training we receive will bear fruit
— that the students we work with during camp will be transformed by God’s Word!

Trusting God,
Rachel T. & the Transform Team
