Evil Is A Reality

Evil is a reality.  As a Christian, I hear this so often, but do I believe that this is true?  Sometimes, I wish that I lived in the fairy tale that ended with, “….and they all lived happily ever after.”

However, my life is rarely as picture-perfect as our fairy tale friends. Yet, even in these familiar fairy tales there is some element of evil.  Cinderella had a wicked step-mother; Sleeping Beauty faced the evil queen, Maleficent; Ariel, everyone’s favorite finned friend, battled Ursula, the wicked sea-queen…and the list goes on and on.

Remarkably, in these fictitious stories, we never bat an eye at how “evil” will be vanquished.  Who in these stories vanquishes the evil? Can you remember? Most often, the grand Prince Charming sweeps in and saves the day, casting a shadow over despair.

However, we are in the real world and evil exists here as well.   It has existed since the very first man on earth, Adam.  God even tells us that the intent of a man’s heart has been evil from his youth (Gen. 8:21).

Will evil ever cease to exist? The answer to this is an adamant, YES! Our Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ gives us hope that He alone will ultimately vanquish sin and death forever (Revelation 20:14-21:1). However, as believers, our hope to conquer evil on a daily basis comes from the Holy Spirit inside of us.  The Lord gives us ability to walk according to His ways by His Spirit.  Read what Galatians 5:16-17 tells us.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.  For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.”

Paul also tells us in his letter to the Corinthians that if anyone is in Christ he/she is a new creature, the old has gone and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17).  The old wickedness/evil of our own fleshly hearts has been replaced by the Lord’s Spirit of truth and goodness.

For the believer, evil should never be equated with devastation.  When this is our attitude we are diminishing the power of our Lord and Savior.  God is bigger than the evil we face. He is El-Roi, the God who sees; he is El Shaddai, the ALL-SUFFICIENT one; He is Jehovah—Nissi, the Lord our BANNER.  He fights for us!

Let us not be downtrodden by evil that we perhaps often, or even daily face.  We are called to be more than conquerors! Romans tells us that “we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loves us.”  So remember, evil is a reality, but as believers, you and I have the HOLY SPIRIT living inside of us to FIGHT FOR us, let us be not troubled! Evil exists but the Prince of Peace WILL come riding in on His WHITE HORSE to save the day now and forever (Revelation)!
