How We Endure Suffering Part 2: Believing in God

When I think of the word “suffering” I imagine situations of severe hardship like what you might read on Voice of the Martyrs. I do not even try to categorize my trials with the stories I’ve heard about people held captive in closed countries or stories of people being tortured and/or persecuted for their race, or even for their faith.

I have this preconceived notion of what suffering is and what it is not, but suffering is defined as undergoing pain, distress, or hardship. At some point in life we all face those things. Pain may come from disappointment or it may come from loss. No matter what the cause is, when you feel pain and distress it is a real feeling. There is no denying the hurt or depression you feel when life doesn’t go how you want, whether it’s when a loved one passes, you experience a breakup, or things just always seem to go wrong. What you feel is real, but you cannot let your feelings dictate your life. More than what you feel, trust in what you know.  The best way of enduring suffering is believing God and His promises!

So, what do you know? What is true? Look to scripture. Know God and what He has said.

The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in Him. – Psalm 37:39-40

God Saves

Above all things, know that God saves us. He is righteous. You can always, always, always look to Him in your distress because He loves you. He is good and He delivers you. He has delivered you from sin and will deliver you from evil. Turn to Him as your stronghold and refuge. He is an ever-present help in times of trouble. He will bring you peace, even in your times of suffering. Perfect peace.

You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on You,
because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord God is an everlasting rock. –Isaiah 26:3-4

Do you trust God to take your suffering and bring you peace? Do you believe in Him and that He will give you help? Do you trust Him? Do you trust that though circumstances may seem and feel bad, He can use them for good to advance His kingdom and glory?

The hardest parts of my life are the times in which I have grown the most. I have seen God use my suffering to show Himself and save others. I trust that He is good and will not waste any bit of my suffering. I believe Him when He says that He will help me and give me peace. He has done it before and I trust that He is faithful and will do it again.

You can trust Him as well whenever you feel like you are suffering. The passages above are just a few of the myriad of promises found in Scripture. I encourage you in times of trouble to meditate on such truths and believe Him.
