Inept and Thankful

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good;
      his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100)

I could have written about thankfulness over the usual things in life. I am thankful for my job, getting my own place, good times with old and new friends, etc. But while I am grateful for these, I wanted to write about a deeper thankfulness, a thankfulness in light of the reality of who I am and who God is.

The more I experience, the clearer I see my ineptitude in handling life. When God entrusts precious things to me, I am hurt to see my ineptness to rightly handle them. Faithless, sinful, selfish, doubting, unbelieving, and just messed up! If I do right, something goes wrong. If I do wrong, something goes worse. And yet I realize–I have Someone who loves me still. Gives grace to me still. Redeems me still. The contrast here between me and God brings Psalm 100 alive to me.

Psalm 100 is a beautiful song of thanksgiving. The focus of its thanksgiving is enduring. Notice the conclusion word “For” in verse 5. That “For” did not always carry a depth for me as it does now. See, through my ineptness and inadequacy, I learned how all of my adequacy as His servant is from Him (2 Cor. 3:4-6). I deeply feel my inadequacy apart from Him. I therefore deeply feel how thankful I am for what the psalmist is singing about. There’s a contrast here. For, (because) even in my weakness:

“The Lord is good.
His love is steadfast.
His steadfast love endures forever.
He is faithful.
And His faithfulness endures to all generation.”

And even as I wrote this, the song “Forever Reign” played on my playlist. How fitting a praise to the One who fills my lack with His fullness! This is my God. I am thankful for Him!

“You are good, You are good
When there’s nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin

You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You’re the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life,
In You death has lost its sting

Oh, I’m running to Your arms,
I’m running to Your arms
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign!”
~Hillsong “Forever Reign”

Let us, therefore, give thanks to Him and bless His name!
