The Battlefield: Heart & Mind

Spiritual warfare is happening..but where?

Where is it fought? Where is this battlefield?

The battlefield is in our hearts and our minds.

In 2 Corinthians 11:3, Paul writes,

“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” (NASB)

Paul knows that our enemy longs to deceive us. There is no truth in him, he has been a murderer from the beginning, and he is the father of all lies (John 8:44). He disguises sin to appear as righteousness, and lies to appear as truth. He did this in Genesis 3 when he used his craftiness to deceive Eve into thinking that she really wouldn’t die if she ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and he uses the same “distort-what’s-true-so-you-can’t-tell-what’s-right” tactic now.

How can we discern between God’s truth and the enemy’s lies?

How do we not fall into the enemy’s trap?

We guard our hearts, as Proverbs 4:23 says.

“Watch over your heart with all diligence,

for from it flow the springs of life.” (NASB)

The heart (Hebrew, “leb”) is our inner man, our soul, and our understanding. It is where our belief in Jesus Christ as the atonement for our sins abides. It is where affection for our Savior’s gracious gift of reconciliation to our Father is stirred. And this is why our hearts are under attack. If faith in Jesus takes root in the heart, then the enemy is going to distract, deceive, distort, and anything else he can in order to keep believers from turning to Christ.

We keep our minds from wavering, like Isaiah 26:3 says.

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,

Because he trusts in You.” (NASB)

The mind (Hebrew, “yetser”) is our form, our intellectual framework. Different messages, good or bad, are thrown in our faces daily. If we are not careful, we could be influenced by the wrong messages.  We need to know God’s Word. We need to be grounded in His truth so that we will not be carried by every wind of doctrine or by trickery of men (Ephesians 4:14) This is the only way we will be able to discern the real versus the counterfeit.

In order to guard our hearts and keep our minds steadfast, we desperately need to know the Word because God’s Word is Truth (John 17:17). We will then be prepared to resist the lies that the enemy, who is prowling around, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8), craftily sends our way.

Praise God that we have the victorJesus Christ, living in us.

He has already won the battle for us! How AWESOME is that? May we encourage one another to live out these truths daily, to keep fighting, and to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus!(Philippians 3:14)
