The Great Ones

Greatness…..who doesn’t want a piece of it? When you think of the word you think of power, power and more power. But according to Jesus, God’s greatness is a little bit different from how we picture it:

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven…. Matt 18:1-4

Wait…a kid? Yep. Not only do you need to be like them to enter, but they are the greatest in the kingdom! As Jesus puts it, it all comes down to their humility.

God says it. What He says is true. They believe it. Done. It is conviction in its purest form. It’s what makes greatness.

I teach a Discover 4 Yourself class with a small group of girls and I can attest to this truth (God doesn’t need it but I thought I’d volunteer anyhow) I want to encourage you with some faith-filled testimonies from a few 10-year old ‘great ones’:

“For I know that the LORD is great And that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.”
Psalm 135:5-6 (One of their memory verses in Jonah D4Y)

Throughout the book of Jonah “the LORD appointed” is a key repeated phrase, making His sovereignty a main theme. The girls just loved this! Their eyes would light up and they’d get all excited whenever this subject came up. Their God was in charge then & now and they knew it! It blew my mind to see how these children could take hold of such deep truths while we as adults stumble over them.

“The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and will save them.”
Psalm 145:18-19
(Another of their memory verses from Jonah D4Y)

One girl was jaw-dropped amazed by the fact that God really hears our prayers and that He is near and will rescue us. She realized that this verse isn’t just a bunch of words, it is a promise. She could go to God and He would hear her! She has been a little prayer warrior ever since. The applications she wrote in her homework would make you tear up. One day she shared with me, “I just want everyone to know God this Christmas!”

When we studied Esther in the spring they just kept getting deeper.

Sarah is a spunky little girl who was adopted from China. In this study she saw the significance of God bringing her out of the situation in which she was born and into a godly family “for a time such as this.”

My little sister, Hannah, is also one of my students. Only a few weeks after we completed our Esther study she was in a car wreck that was nearly devastating (Praise God for His great mercy!) I was concerned that she might have been a bit traumatized from the experience so I took her aside and spoke with her that night. She however, opened the conversation, “You know Courtney, I am so glad that we studied Esther.” I asked her why. “Well, because God saved Esther because He had a plan for her. And I know that He saved me in the wreck because He has a plan for me!” I was impressed with her application…but she didn’t stop there! “And He let the wreck happen!” Wow! That one caught me off guard! So I asked her why she thought this. She replied,“I think it was so we could talk about this stuff right now. I think He likes it when we talk open like this.” ‘Whatever the LORD pleases, He does.’ Remember?

Great lives are built on this foundation: Raw, unashamed conviction of who God is and what He has spoken. He said it. We believe and act upon it. That is greatness.

P.S. These little theologians are very confidant as ‘top notch reporters’ to explain any misconceptions that any of you may have concerning Jonah and Esther. They share your frustration over the fact that all the kiddie Bibles only tell part of the story and would be happy to tell the rest. Providing that you don’t mind acting it out of course!  ;)
